Review: Poison by Bridget Zinn

Poison
Author:  Bridget Zinn
Pages: 288
Genre: Young Adult - Fantasy
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Amazon: Poison

Synopsis. (Goodreads)

Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled potions master, is the only one who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction—which means she’s the only one who can save it. Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom’s future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend.

But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart . . . misses.

Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king’s army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At least she’s not alone. She’s armed with her vital potions, a too-cute pig, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can’t stop thinking about. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her?

Kyra is not your typical murderer, and she’s certainly no damsel-in-distress—she’s the lovable and quick-witted hero of this romantic novel that has all the right ingredients to make teen girls swoon.

Reviews: 4 out of 5 stars

I was instantly drawn to the beautiful cover of Poison, it is really eye-catching and after reading the synopsis, I knew it would be a fantasy tale I would enjoy.

Poison was a real page turner, the main heroine is Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled and respected potions master and the only person who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction.

Kyra ends up hunted when she attempts to kill her former best friend and the future queen, Ariana with her poison dart and misses, now on the run she sets out to find where the princess is hiding. She was such a strong, self-reliant character who I came to adore as the story progressed – some of the predicaments she landed herself in were quite hilarious; the storyline follows Kyra in her journey to finish the job she started –  to kill her former friend and along the way she has the help from adorable Rosie her magical pig and Fred who I was drawn to instantly.

Fred was such a likeable, fun and witty character who bought comic relief to the story; he was laid-back and carefree and although I think the relationship between Kyra and Fred progressed too fast, it was quite cute and sweet none the less.

The fantasy story Zinn has weaved is filled with magical mayhem and interesting characters; it was adventurous and although I expected a heavier plot line it ended up being quite light-hearted and fun. You are drawn into the creative and wonderful well-built world.

As the story developed, Kyra's secrets and her motives come to be revealed; leaving twists and turns aplenty until the very end. I loved the mystery and suspense; I was quite surprised by a few revelations.

Poison was fast paced and engaging, I loved Ms. Zinn's simplistic writing style, the banter and the dialogue between Kyra and Fred had me laughing out loud, I loved every word. The plot was solid, the world-building amazing and the characterisations perfect.

Overall, Poison was a terrific fantasy story that had me riveted throughout.

Sadly, Bridget Zinn passed away before Poison was published. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends.

Thank-you to Disney Hyperion for the opportunity to read and review Poison.

About Bridget Zinn

Bridget grew up in Wisconsin. She went to the county fair where she met the love of her life, Barrett Dowell. They got married right before she went in for exploratory surgery which revealed she had colon cancer. They christened that summer the "summer of love" and the two celebrated with several more weddings. Bridget continued to read and write until the day she died. Her last tweet was "Sunshine and a brand new book. Perfect."

Bridget wanted to make people laugh and hoped readers would enjoy spending time with the characters she created. As a librarian/writer she loved books with strong young women with aspirations. She also felt teens needed more humorous reads. She really wanted to write a book with pockets of warmth and happiness and hoped that her readers' copies would show the watermarks of many bath time reads.

ARC Review: Apollyon (Covenant #4) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Apollyon (Covenant, #4)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Covenant
Pages: 360
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Amazon: Apollyon
Release Date: 9th April 2013

Synopsis. (Goodreads)

Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.
The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.
Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.

Reviews: 5 out of 5 stars

My review contains possible spoilers of books 1-3

Apollyon is the fourth book in the amazing Covenant series by the uber talented Jennifer L. Armentrout and is probably my favourite out of the series to date – a hard feat considering I have loved them all.

JLA's Novella, Elixir (Covenant #3.5) can be read between these books to get an understanding of what happens when Aiden is forced to put Alex on the elixir, something which went completely against his beliefs and causes him a lot of pain and self loathing which shows in this book. {Find the novella for free here}

The ending of Deity was heart wrenching, with Alex pulling away from Aiden and connecting with the First - Seth, Aiden was determined to find a way to break their bond but it didn't come without drama and consequences, the first few chapters were especially difficult as it just didn't seem it was possible but with determination we see some great changes.

Alex is her ever snarky, self sacrificing, stubborn yet fiercely loyal self but in Apollyon we really start to see her embrace her destiny and to understand the power she holds, I think she has matured drastically since Half-blood – I absolutely adore her as a character.

In this action-packed installment we see further plot progression, there is so much going on I was literally flying through the pages; without giving away spoilers - the gods have killed thousands in their quest to stop Seth from draining Alex of her power and killing off the gods. A lot was revealed and I was surprised by a few aspects and shocked by others, the villain was completely unexpected and left me gaping. The journey Alex undertook with Aiden was fraught with danger and despair and not everyone has come out of it unscathed.

Seth – ugh! I knew that guy couldn't be trusted, he is power hungry and deceitful and I despise him that little bit more in each book I read! I am so curious to see how it all plays out in Sentinel, he didn't get as much page time in this book which I was quietly relieved about.

The romance {sigh} I have cheered for Alex and Aiden's relationship from the very first book and to see their unconditional love and their devotion to one another despite the many obstacles standing in the way now out in the open was so sweet and wonderful, there were so many awww moments; I absolutely adore them together and at least the forbidden love aspect isn't as important as it once was now the world is in utter chaos.

The ever-present, reliable secondary characters each played a supportive role to Alex and her plight and showed their devotion and loyalty especially Marcus, Olivia, Lea, Solos, Deacon, and Luke as well as a few surprise visits which was really nice to see (I won't mention by who).

I loved reading about each of the gods, I was clueless about who to trust but they each played an important role in the overall story - JLA knows her mythology.

The overall story progression has been phenomenal, the creative and wonderfully written story JLA has weaved has left me mesmerised and I'm actually quite sad the series is nearing its end; it has been a roller-coaster ride filled with all of the elements I really find entertaining in a Young Adult novel.

Overall, JLA is an auto-buy for me and one of my all time favourite authors – Apollyon gave us the ideal mix of amazing characters, kick-butt action scenes, a beautiful love story, mythological intrigue and twists and turns filled with betrayals and secrets; It had me hooked from the very first to the last page and I literally sighed when I finished it.

An exhilarating, captivating 5 star read – I can't wait for Sentinel to see how everything works out with the prophecy.

ARC Review: The Rules (Project Paper Doll) by Stacey Kade

The Rules (Project Paper Doll, #1)Author: Stacey Kade
Series: Project Paper Doll
Pages: 416
Genre: Young Adult
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Amazon Pre-order: The Rules
Release Date: 23rd April 2013

Synopsis: (Goodreads)

1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don’t get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

Review: 3 ½ out of 5 stars

The Rules was kindly provided to me by Netgalley for Dysney Hyperion and is the first book in the Project Paper Doll series by Stacey Kade.

I was so intrigued by the premise of The Rules, I love a good sci-fi thriller, team it with school drama and forbidden romance and it definitely piques my interest but as I started reading this book, I came to the realisation that it was very different to what I had initially thought.

Sixteen year-old Ariane Tucker was created by GTX in a genetics lab; she is a human/alien hybrid and spent the first years of her life being experimented on and tormented until an explosion gives her an out and she is rescued by staff member, Mark Tucker and takes on the role of his deceased daughter. Ariane lives by five very important rules:

1.  Never trust anyone.
2. Remember they are always searching.
3. Don’t get involved.
4. Keep your head down.
5. Don’t fall in love.

She has always kept a low profile until a horrible prank goes wrong at school and she is bought to the attention of the ‘popular’ group, including the grand-daughter of GTX director, Rachel Jacobs and the police chiefs’ son Zane Bradshaw.

I loved the voice of Ariane, the powers she once had at GTX she had managed to block but now she is feeling a wide range of emotions they are being bought to the surface once again so it is even more important that she remains invisible, not an easy feat when she seeks revenge on Rachel, the person who has terrorized her best friend. Ariane had a unique personality, she was quite naïve but also strong when she needed to be and she showed real emotion when it came to things she believed in – she was a character who was relatable and realistic.

The love interest is Zane who has a difficult home life, his mother has left and his father has extremely high expectations. He has always thought Ariane was interesting and I absolutely adored him for the way he looked out for her, especially considering who he was friends with; I definitely didn’t expect this from him but he was more than eager to pay-back Rachel for her mistreatment of others.

The plot mainly focused on high school drama and seeking revenge but we also gain a lot of insight about Ariane’s purpose and why GTX were so eager to get a hold of her again, the story was filled with many surprises, one twist left me heartbroken for Ariane but the ending also left a lot of hope.

A lot of the characters were your typical YA stereotypes – hot boy, mean girl, invisible love interest, and bad guys with an agenda but despite this I still enjoyed them all. I liked that the story was told from both Ariane and Zane’s POV, we get insight into both of their thought processes which I always enjoy.

I quite liked Stacey Kade’s writing; it was crisp and entertaining. I found the pacing was at times too slow and I was left with a number of questions by the end of the book so I am hoping they are answered in the sequel.

Unfortunately the only person who can is Dale Finnigan, the guy she publicly humiliated with a sharp-tongued insult that has left him branded.

Desperate, Nicole has no choice but to haunt Dale and convince the freaked-out senior to help her. Will he find her body before it's too late? Or will the guy who tried to kill her with his car, beat him there and finish her off before anyone finds out?
