Genre: Young Adult
Pages: 357
Publisher: Skyscape

In the week since Lela returned to Rhode Island as Captain of the Guard with Malachi as her second in command, local news has been dominated by chilling sightings of human-like creatures running on all fours. Lela knows there’s only one explanation: the Mazikin have arrived in the land of the living.

Needing to maintain the appearance of a normal life for her foster mother, her probation officer, and her classmates, Lela returns to Warwick High along with Malachi. At night they secretly hunt for the Mazikin nest. To assist, two new Guards from very different parts of the Shadowlands are assigned to Lela’s unit, including the bad boy Jim, who repeatedly challenges Lela's authority. Lela struggles to keep all her Guards on the right side of the law, but their mistakes come at a terrible cost.

As one painful revelation follows another and the Mazikin start targeting those closest to her, Lela finds herself more vulnerable than she’s ever been, wanting a future more than she ever has. With an enemy determined to separate soul from body, one question remains: how much is she willing to sacrifice to protect those she loves?

** This book contains possible spoilers from the first book. Sanctum **

Fractured is the second book in the Guards of the Shadowlands series by Sarah Fine and begins a week after Sanctum left off.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, it was unbelievably awesome and so different to anything I have read more recently so I was more than anxious to get hold of the sequel which also didn't fail to disappoint.

Malachi Sokol and Lela Santos have returned to Rhode Island after receiving their punishment from the Judge of the Sanctum; Lela is now Captain and Malachi is posing as a high school student and acting as her second in command, an unusual arrangement which seems to work well since he has been away from the land of the living for quite some time.

Fractured has a dark and gritty plot which had Lela and Malachi hunting the Mazikin who have entered the realm in search of human hosts. They are an evil bunch intent on making earth their home. The world-building continues to progress, I found the new setting to be done well and despite it not being as action-packed, bleak and intense as the first book, the overall story was strong and continues to flow with a few surprises to keep everything interesting but still left me curious about what the author has in store with the final installment.

I really enjoyed the character progression, Lela is strong and kick-butt and takes on her new role with strength and courage although at times she did doubt herself and her abilities; Malachi in his new environment was having to find his way again, he takes his role as protector seriously and because of this we see a few miscommunications and dramas. We also meet some wonderful new secondary characters who I thought were great and played a pivotal role in the overall story, I found myself coming to like Henry and Jim who were working under Lela and I still adore Raphael.

At the beginning of the book, I really found myself enjoying the awkward, sweet and budding romance but as Lela and Malachi began to spend time apart and with others, I became extremely frustrated; this is an element I really enjoyed in the first book and I honestly felt Lela was beginning to trust him so I was unsure what the purpose was of introducing unnecessary complications and drama so the romance was unfortunately lacking for me.

Sarah Fine’s writing is fabulous, it has depth and is detailed with the setting, characters and each of the locations described vividly, you are drawn into the world she has created with her wonderful story-telling.

Overall, Fractured is creative, gloomy at times and filled with some kick-butt action. The ending left me gaping so my biggest gripe is the wait I have for the next book.

Also, a gorgeous cover!

Thank-you kindly to Netgalley/Skyscape for the opportunity to read and review Fractured.

Wow, wow and more wow! Origin was amazingly fabulous, real life was put on hold for this one I was so glued to my seat, anxiously anticipating what would happen as I frantically flipped through the pages and boy did JLA deliver a gripping, captivating read which left me emotionally spent at the end of it all.

After the ending of Opal, which was brutal! We see Katy now being held and tested by Daedelus and while there she really showed what a strong character she was, as the testing/torture continued day after day her love for Daemon continued to grow strong; she was resilient, stubborn, feisty but also weakening with her resolve to find out the truth not only about Daedalus and their purpose but also the Luxen and what she has always believed of them.

Never one to give up on those he loves, Daemon has his own plan to rescue Kat and ends up at the testing facility himself in the hopes of mysterious Luc somehow getting them out if Daemon retrieves something of importance to him. What can I say about smexy Daemon, he honestly continues to grow as a character for me, he is intelligent, snarky, arrogant and completely in love with Kat; I adored his dedication in finding a way to save her and their moments together were so sweet, I couldn’t help but hope for a way out for them so they didn’t end up as Dawson and Bethany had.

We find out a lot more about Daedelus as well as a new super species that had me gaping with what they could actually do, it was quite freaky. I adore JLA’s story telling and the way the series is progressing – it has all of the elements I love in a YA novel – amazing action sequences, heart melting romance, intriguing mystery and fabulous characters you can’t help but love but we have lost a few over the course of the series, this book seeing the most casualties which was quite sad and left me quite shocked; there was no holding back.

The secondary characters have always played a pivotal role in this series, it was great to see Dee back to a form of her usual self, we are introduced to Archer who I really liked, Luc continues to intrigue me and I couldn’t help but hold out hope for some normalcy for Dawson and Bethany, my heart breaks for what they have been through. The support they each have for one another has been remarkable.

JLA’s writing is engaging and flows beautifully and I was so excited to get both Daemon and Katy’s POV in Origin; it’s always nice going into a book and having so many unexpected plot twists and turns that you end up having no idea as to which direction the author will take us, I love the element of surprise and the many gaping moments which keep the story fresh and exciting.

Overall, Origin delivered a whole load of emotions and left me reeling at the end, it is the best book in the series for me and has left me super eager for the final instalment Opposition. The Lux series is one I can’t recommend highly enough.

Fave quotes:

“Did you think you could stop me? I'll burn the world down to save her.”

“A certain bone-deep understanding occurred and my hand tightened around the smaller one I held. It weren't stars we were staring at. The sky was falling.”

“So I was thinking, there're eighty-six thousand, four hundred seconds in a day, right? There're one thousand, four hundred and forty minutes in a day...There're one hundred and sixty-eight hours in a week. Around eighty-seven hundred and then some hours in a year, and you know what?...I want to spend every second, every minute, every hour with you...I want a year's worth of seconds and minutes with you. I want a decade's worth of hours, so many that I can't add them up.”

“She was beautiful, and I was so, so desperately in love with her.
Her chin jerked up, and she sucked in a breath, eyes widening.
Okay, I may have actually thought that last bit at her.
You did. A small smile split her lips.”

Resilient
Pages: 336
Publisher: Pants on Fire Press
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal

Synopsis. (Goodreads)

Livia has never felt like she fits in. As normal as it sounds, Livia is anything but ordinary. She can feel every emotion of every single person around her, and it’s maddening. In pursuit of some psychic quiet, she moves with her family from New York City to Whidbey Island in the lush and sleepy Pacific Northwest. But when a horseback riding accident in her new home gives her a broken leg that heals in a day, she finds that another unexplainable ability has manifested, and her life isn’t about to get any easier.

Adam has no problem fitting in and making friends. In fact, he’s the top of the school, the boy everyone knows and loves. However, people only see what he allows them to. No one knows what Adam is truly capable of. After witnessing Livia’s accident, Adam sees something intriguing in her quick recovery, something that gives him hope that he’s not alone.
Adam is the only one whose emotions Livia can’t read. Afraid of not knowing what goes on behind his dark eyes, Livia decides to keep him at a distance. Yet the more she tries to ignore him, the more alluring he becomes, and while their personal quests for identity will inevitably bring them closer together, it is the confirmation of what they really are that threatens to tear them apart.

Resilient, told in alternating point of views, is a gripping story of survival and romance, in which two teenagers face the consequences of being anything but normal.

Turn-offs

1- Whiny Characters. I can’t stand when a character complains the whole time.
2- Too many detailed descriptions of what the character sees. It is essential to describe the setting, but I don’t need to know if the wall is textured or smooth. I like to know what is going on in the MC’s mind and how the setting is affecting them.
3- Lack of dialogues. I need dialogues, it brings a novel to life.
4- Love triangles. I really dislike them. I think even if a character is capable of loving two people at the same time, they gotta love one more than the other, and they should know who they want the most.
5-Too much back story. I don’t like when the character goes back and forth from past to present, especially when I want to know what is happening now but the character takes me back to when she/he was five. It drives me crazy!

Turn-ons.

1- A pretty cover. So unfair I know, but if the cover is pretty, I’ll at least pick it up and read the summary.
2- Characters who I can relate to and characters who make unexpected choices. I like when the story gives us an ending that we didn’t see coming but makes complete sense.
3- Male POV. I love them and wish there were more books with a boys POV.
4- Summer settings. It brings me back to happy moments when school was finally out, and I was off to the beach.
5- Opposites attract. I like when the characters are completely different from each other and they find that common attraction.

Pages: 432
Publisher: Bloomsbury Childrens
Release date: 15th August 2013
Genre: Young Adult – Fantasy

Synopsis. (Goodreads)

Eighteen-year-old Celaena Sardothien is bold, daring and beautiful – the perfect seductress and the greatest assassin her world has ever known. But though she won the King’s contest and became his champion, Celaena has been granted neither her liberty nor the freedom to follow her heart. The slavery of the suffocating salt mines of Endovier that scarred her past is nothing compared to a life bound to her darkest enemy, a king whose rule is so dark and evil it is near impossible to defy. Celaena faces a choice that is tearing her heart to pieces: kill in cold blood for a man she hates, or risk sentencing those she loves to death. Celaena must decide what she will fight for: survival, love or the future of a kingdom. Because an assassin cannot have it all . . . And trying to may just destroy her.

Love or loathe Celaena, she will slice open your heart with her dagger and leave you bleeding long after the last page of the highly anticipated sequel in what is undeniably THE hottest new fantasy series.

Review: 5 out of 5 stars

Crown of Midnight has to be my most anticipated read for this year, I absolutely loved Throne of Glass and this book was just as amazing if not better; I was completely consumed by Sarah J. Maas’s compelling story-telling, her well-developed characters and the way the overall story is being pieced together, it’s a book that kept me captivated until the ungodly hours of the morning.

Eighteen year-old Calaena Sardothien is now the kings royal champion and is playing assassin to a number of people he has on his hit list, his motives are unclear and she begins to question what his purpose could possibly be and has quite a few secrets of her own when it comes to this aspect. There was so much character progression for Calaena, we saw her fight, kill and maim in the first book as she competed for champion in the kings competition but it was really kicked up a notch in Crown of Midnight, we see a brutal, unforgiving and ruthless killing machine; she was written to perfection.

I adored Chaol in the first book and there were many surprises in this as their relationship progressed but there were also moments that had my heart breaking for them. I loved how he showed more of himself in this book which I really appreciated; he’s noble, kind and protective and I see him as the perfect match for Calaena. Dorian I still find to be lack-lustre and despite a few discoveries about him, I found he was more or less on the side-lines in this book.

There are so many shocks, twists and turns that had my head spinning, the world-building continues to strengthen and the plot flows well. I love the story progression and the way in which it is coming together, this installment had the perfect blend of action, intrigue and was filled with interesting political drama; the ending left me gaping and eager to read the next book.

The writing is perfection and flows fluidly; Sarah J. Maas’s creative and refreshingly unique series is one that is exciting and vivid in the details and imagery.

Overall, Crown of Midnight more than exceeded my expectations with its fabulous characters, amazing plot development and brilliant world-building. My only gripe is the wait we have until the next book.

Fave quotes:

“The rest of the world quieted into nothing. In that moment, after ten long years, Celaena looked at Chaol and realised she was home.”

“Dance with me, Celaena," he said again, his voice rough. When her eyes met his she forgot about the cold, and the moon, and the glass palace looming above them. The secret library and the king's plans and Mort and Elena faded into nothing. She took his hand and there was only the music and Chaol.”

“Roland gave her a courtier’s smile. “And what sort of work do you do for my uncle?”
Dorian shifted on his feet and Chaol went very still, but Celaena returned Roland’s smile and said, “I bury the king’s opponents where nobody will ever find them.”

Sarah J. MaasAbout the author: Sarah J. Maas lives in Southern California, and over the years, she has developed an unhealthy appreciation for Disney movies and bad pop music. She adores fairy tales and ballet, drinks too much coffee, and watches absolutely rubbish TV shows. When she's not busy writing YA fantasy novels, she can be found exploring the California coastline.
