REVIEW Playing with Fire (Tales of an Extraordinary Girl) Gena Showalter

Author: Gena Showalter
Pages: 371
Genre: Paranormal Romance
From the Blurb.

Used to be my greatest achievement was holding a job more than three days. Now suddenly I can shoot fireballs, chill your drink, or blow-dry your hair at fifty paces with a blink of my eye! It all started when this crazy scientist dropped something in my Grande Mocha Latte. Of course I got wicked sick. Next morning I'm waking up with this total hottie bending over me. He tells me 1)his name's Rome Masters, 2)he's a government agent and 3)I can control the four elements with a thought. He seems even less pleased by my (apparently irreversible) transformation than I am . . . Because now he'll have to kill me.

REVIEW: 3 out of 5 stars

This was my first book by Gena Showalter & a promising start to a new series.

Belle is a 20-something year old girl who is not only trying to take care of herself but also that of her father and is struggling to hold a job; her smart mouth attitude & tardiness don't seem to work in her favour. After a drama filled day at work she unknowingly drinks a formula placed in her mocha latte that gives her supernatural powers. Those powers being the ability to wield the four elements.

The story is written in first person and tells of how Belle comes to accept her powers as well as control them (although not very well).

Rome is a hottie & true Alpha, he was sent after Belle once it was discovered she had become ill after drinking the formula; he was meant to 'neutralise' her but in the ends decides he can use her for his own benefits to protect his daughter. He becomes infatuated with her & starts to help her with controlling her emotions & abilities, I enjoyed the banter between them as well as the constant nick names they would come up with for each other; she also seemed to accept Rome just as he was (I wont give away his 'special' ability).

The dialogue was witty & fun with a few laugh out loud moments.

I enjoyed the secondary characters, I felt sympathy for Lexis; Tanner (Empath), Belle's father & Sherridan (BFF) were fun & I hope to read more about Cody (his ability to wield electricity fascinated me).

I liked the idea of a Paranormal agency & humans with super enhanced abilities, I probably would have rated it higher if it wasn't for some of Belle's smart mouthed comments & immaturity.

I am looking forward to reading book 2 in this series, Twice as Hot, I just hope Belle does some growing up.
