REVIEW: 3.5 out of 5 stars
I have been anxiously awaiting Shiver of Fear since reading book 1, Edge of Sight in the Guardian Angelino’s series.
Marc Rossi, a 38yo former FBI and Gun Shop owner’s first assignment as a Guardian Angelino which could make or break the new firm is to convince Devyn Sterling, the daughter of an infamous fugitive to leave Northern Ireland in whichever way possible but with no real given reason by the FBI as to why.
In book one Edge of Sight; Devyn’s newspaper columnist husband is brutally murdered after betraying her trust, leaving her to question her personal character and the direction in which her life is taking.
The first half of the book for me was slow paced and more of a lesson on the touristy sites of Ireland (which were actually quite interesting) and Devyn’s distress of having no real family connections and seeking the truth about the woman who gave her up for adoption; from the second half of the book it really started to get interesting, there was more action and plot twists and turns that I definitely couldn’t predict!
There were an endless number of characters getting in the way of Devyn finding her birth mother Sharon, all with the same message to leave Ireland; she was stubborn and determined to proceed in her search with Marc’s protection, never giving up but never knowing if her mother was working for evil or the greater good.
Their investigation uncovers lies, secrets, and an International terrorism plot.
The romantic aspects fell flat for me, I didn’t feel there was much of a connection between Marc and Devyn, her constant focus on her tainted DNA and thoughts of no-one being able to love her because of who her parent’s were, were quite annoying! Marc to me was wonderful although he too had his own issues of trust after having been betrayed badly by his ex-wife. And what really put me off was Devyn’s obsession for a baby just so she could have a family! The way she practically begged Marc made me cringe. They were likeable and engaging but Devyn’s thoughts and actions just didn’t make sense to me. I didn’t feel the level of chemistry and passion I got from Samantha and Zach in Edge of Sight.
St. Claire does a wonderful job of setting up the background of all the characters and the family dynamic, it was never confusing for me trying to work out who was who and what role each played within the large Rossi & Angelino families.
I am a huge Roxanne St. Claire fan and I loved the way she pulled the story together. With this novel being the second in the Guardian Angelinos, as a reader she really drew me in and made me connect not only with current but also future characters, which was done perfectly.
It was a sweet HEA and some issues were resolved but there was a bit to get through to get to this stage.
Though the romance was lacking, the mystery and suspense more then made up for that.
Not as good for me as book 1 but I still enjoyed it; It was action packed, emotionally charged and a sexy Romantic Suspense.
I am looking forward to reading more about tomboy, skateboard loving Vivi along with FBI Agent Colton Lang in the next book Face of Danger and I especially can’t wait to read more about the mysterious Gabriel Rossi, he has certainly left me very intrigued.
