The Hunger Games Read-along Chapter 9

The Hunger Games

Thank-you to Larissa from The Howling Turtle for hosting this wonderful event! I have thoroughly enjoyed everyone’s chapter posts to date and am quite excited for the movie’s upcoming release.

Chapter 9 - The Interview process

Katniss is still reeling after Peeta’s request to be coached separately, she feels betrayed by him but is shocked by this because trust has never been part of their agreement, and on the other hand she is relieved she can now stop the pretense of them being friends and get on with thoughts of the games.

Countdown – 2 days until the games commence…

Imagine having your personality decided for you - how you should act, how you should speak, dress and answer the simplest questions, In Chapter 9 of The Hunger Games we see Katniss spending four hours with Effie working on presentation and four hours with Haymitch working on content, she is being groomed for her tribute interview all to get the crowd to ‘like and accept’ her and if she succeeds it will determine sponsorship.

She learns some simple truths along the way about how she is perceived by the others.

Negative Haymitch: ‘You’ve got as much charm as a dead slug’, sullen and hostile – Too ‘vulnerable’ for ferocity, not witty, funny, sexy or mysterious – in the end Haymitch gives up and advises her to not let the audience see how much she openly despises them.

Positive Cinna: ‘Just be yourself - No one can help but admire your spirit’

Katniss wows the audience with her answers, but it was also a sad moment when she reveals her promise to Prim.

Another thing I really enjoyed about this chapter was Peeta’s revelation - he tells the host, Caesar Flickerman during his interview that he has a crush on a girl, but that it's not going to work out. Why? Because she came to the Games with him, very sweet!!

If you could ask any of the tributes a question during their interview – what would it be?

  1. Great post!

Before the games, I wouldn't have a great question...maybe something like; "Why do you think you're going to win?"

But after the games, omg, I want to ask a ton of questions to all of them (which is kind of impossible!).
