Review: 4 out of 5 stars

False Memory by Dan Krokos is just what I needed to relieve me of my reading slump. It was an action-packed, gripping read which kept me riveted throughout.

17 year-old Miranda North wakes on a park bench in Cleveland with $400 in her pocket, knowledge of who she is but has no recollection of her past or how she arrived at her destination. When mayhem erupts in the mall where she has sought help from security, Miranda is all too aware that the panic which has ensued was caused when she felt threatened and confused.

Mysterious Peter is pretty much the only person still standing and is there to assist Miranda and give her a better understanding of who and what she actually is, which is a ‘Rose’ and raised to be a weapon – she has the ability to release an agonizing pulse of psychic energy which causes chaos and panic and she is part of a genetic experiment as is Peter and a few others.

I liked the premise of False Memory, it was fresh and unique, the sci-fi elements were well done and the world-building enough without being information overload.

Each of the characters were likeable, Miranda was kick-butt, snarky and believable in her actions albeit reckless – I enjoyed reading the small tidbits of her past memories, it gave us more insight into her personality. Peter is the team leader and comes across as fearless, the tight knit dynamic of the team was written well.

I was hooked on this enthralling adventure from the very beginning; we are taken on a non-stop, action packed journey with a number of twists and turns in False Memory. Miranda and her team members; Peter, Noah and Olive are not only having to evade the bad guys who are wanting to use them for their own ‘testing’ purposes but also their concern of maintaining their regular injections in order to retain their memories.

The romance; we do have a slight love triangle but it wasn’t done in a way to make the reader squirm; Miranda struggles between her past memories of ex-boyfriend Noah and her current attraction towards Peter, to me it was an easy decision from the onset and it was a really sweet romance. I did feel for Noah, despite his betrayal of Miranda he did have redeeming qualities.

I liked Mr. Krokos writing style and I must admit I was nervous to read a male writing a female POV but it actually worked well!

All in all, False Memory is a non-stop thrill ride filled with action, romance and mystery that is go go go from the very beginning. A great start to this new series by Dan Krokos – I am curious to see what the future holds for these teens in the sequel, False Sight.
