Author: Leah Rae Miller

Pages: 352

Blurb:

On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever.

Review: 4 out of 5 Stars

I have been curious about The Summer I Became a Nerd since I first saw the cover and read the synopsis; it was a humorous, entertaining and unique book with wonderful, realistic characters that had me flying through the pages.

Seventeen year old popular cheerleader Madelyne ‘Maddie’ Summers was such a loveable character and someone I think everyone would be able to relate to in one way or another, she was a closet nerd and despite her outward appearances, inwardly wanted to be doing things that weren’t expected of her.

Maddie’s classmate Logan works at the comic shop and was a quirky sweetheart! He sees through Maddie’s façade and introduces her into his geeky world; I adored their interactions and how different she was when she was with him. His best friend, Dan was a classic! I loved his humour and personality.

The Summer I Became a Nerd was an uplifting, fun and light-hearted read that you can’t help but really enjoy. The writing is entertaining and I found myself flying through the pages really liking the characters, the laugh out loud moments and Maddie’s progression throughout the book. There were a few expected misunderstandings between the characters but they were dealt with well and in a way that was believable, you could see where Maddie was coming from by trying to retain her social standing and not be shunned but it was also nice to see her slowly work out what was more important to her.

I quite liked learning about live action role playing which I was clueless about and comics which I admit to never reading.

Overall, The Summer I Became a Nerd was a book I thoroughly enjoyed and appealed to my inner nerd, a few things were predictable but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book; there is a sweet romance, wonderful character growth and a gripping storyline that leaves you smiling.
