Review: 4 out of 5 stars
Soul Possessed is the second book
in The Life After series and follows on right
where the first book left off.
Maggie
is now a Guard of Souls in The After, training alongside broody smexy Jackson
who she shares an interesting past with she has a lot of work ahead of her,
especially with her interesting new ability to take a soul and not really being
accepted by the others.
Maggie
has progressed so much since the first book, I adore her witty personality, her
independence and her kindness to others but there was also a sadness and
vulnerability about her that you couldn’t help but sympathise with. Jackson is
dark, protective, mysterious, dedicated and loyal – I found myself with my
fingers firmly crossed that these two would be together but there were a number
of hurdles preventing this.
All of
the secondary characters were well-developed and played an important role in this
book – I adored Cooper, he was such a fun, loveable guy but to be honest I
don’t see him with the MC. Ally was intriguing, I enjoyed getting to know more
about her and Leha was a favourite.
The
plot was fascinating and action-packed as we learn more about the souls – good
and evil, guards etc. and see the characters embark on a mission to investigate
the shadowed (evil) hunting and recruiting in a small town and someone within
their group being a traitor; just as I thought I knew what was going to happen,
there would be a twist I never saw coming, it made for an interesting and
fast-paced read as I was frantically turning the pages wanting to know the
outcome.
The
book ends on a cliff-hanger which was my biggest gripe but other than this, I enjoyed the intense action sequences, the
mystery and light romance, I wasn’t so big on the secrets and the betrayals but
they were to be expected.
Katlyn
Duncan’s writing flowed beautifully, the storyline was entertaining and the
world-building is strong as were the well-developed likeable characters; it’s a
series I am definitely invested in.
About the author: I've been writing and reading since I can remember. My fondest memories
were pushing mom out of the house to get the latest Goosebumps installment. Even though I went to school for biology and
currently work in the medical field, I find time to write/read every day.
Eventually my persistence turned into my debut novel, Soul Taken, the first book in The Life After trilogy published by
Carina UK.
Outside of writing, I enjoy spending time with my hubs, pup, and sometimes a good rom com.

Another great review. I've not read that many paranormal books in the past year, and this series sounds like a good one to consider.
