Review: Til Death (Fractured Souls #1) by Kate Evangelista

Til Death (Fractured Souls #1)Til Death

Author: Kate Evangelista
Series: Fractured Souls
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Amazon
Release date: 4th March 2014

Synopsis. (Goodreads)

Sixteen-year old Selena Fallon is a dreamer. Not a day-dreamer, but an I-see-the-future kind of dreamer. Normally this is not a problem as she has gotten pretty good at keeping her weird card hidden from everyone in her small town. Except from her best friend Kyle and her grandparents, of course. But when Selena dreams of her own rather bloody death, things get a little too freaky even for her.

Enter Dillan Sloan. Selena has seen the new guy in a different dream, and he is even more droolworthy in person. Beyond the piercing blue eyes and tousled dark hair, there is something else that draws her to him. Something…electric. Unfortunately, Dillan makes it more than clear that he does not feel the same. They just met, so why would he act like he hates her?

When Dillan and Selena are forced together one weekend to work on a school project, Selena prepares to be ignored as usual. But when she stumbles across a few undead in the backyard, Dillan comes to her rescue and reveals a whole lot more. Not only is he part of a society that hunts otherworldly creatures…she is too. And she is being targeted by a force bigger and darker than anything she ever imagined. Despite her death dream, Selena is not going to give up easy, especially when she discovers that Dillan might not actually hate her after all

Review: 3 ½ out of 5 stars

Til Death by Kate Evangelista is the first book in the Fractured Souls series and I have to admit I was initially drawn to the beautiful cover; I’m pleased to say it was also an enjoyable start to the series which has left me keen to read the next installment.

Told in alternating POV’s between Sixteen-year old Selena Fallon and a gorgeous boy she has dreamed about, 17-year old Dillan Sloan we get great insight into both of their thoughts and reactions. Selena is a Dreamer and able to see the future, her grandparents and closest friends are apparently the only ones aware of her special ability until former Guardian, Dillan arrives with his gruff and moody demeanour and knowing more about Selena than what he is initially willing to share.

Selena is a great character who was easy to relate to and like, she is not kick-butt badass but loyal and knows enough about what she can do to respond if the need arises; Dillan on the other hand took a while for me to warm to, he was broody, mean and showed a lot of hostility towards Selena initially but the strange electrical current between them certainly had me intrigued and there was definitely no insta-love, a lot of animosity when they first met but their attraction was obvious so I was curious to see where their relationship would go.

The plot is interesting; we get a great balance of paranormal, romance and mystery that keeps you guessing plus a secret society that has me wanting to know more. The author did a wonderful job with the secondary characters and the fascinating world-building with her explanation of the paranormal hierarchy and the Illumenari but being the first book in the series there are still many questions I am anxious to get answered.

Til Death has a lot of YA clichés - the absence of parents, a young girl who has no idea what she is, a romantic interest who supposedly despises her and everyone around the MC knowing what is going on except her plus a mysterious secret society. Despite this, I was still invested in Kate Evangelista’s amazing story-telling and detailed writing.

The book ends on a cliff-hanger, a big one at that so the wait until book two, After Death (anticipated 3rd March 2015) will be painful.

Overall, I really enjoyed Til Death, the pacing I did find at times was slow and the characters, especially Dillan needed a little refining but otherwise I really enjoyed the world Kate Evangelista has crafted.

Review: 3 ½ out of 5 stars

Kate Evangelista’s debut novel, Taste was a book I absolutely devoured, so when the opportunity arose to read Reaping Me Softly through AToMR Tours, I jumped at the chance.

Seventeen-year-old Arianne Wilson has the ability to see dead people, something which began at a young age after a near-death-experience on the operating table. She is a character you immediately connect with, she is smart and sweet, had a nice family unit and genuinely cared for those around her, especially her sister, Carrie and her best friend Ben.

Nikolas Clark, is the Reaper of Georgia and the boy Ari has had a crush on for quite a while but believing him out of her reach – his job is to escort souls to the cross-roads and he has taken a keen liking to Arianne who accepted him as non-human without question.

Niko was a bored reaper until he met Arianne, but things change when he accidentally reaped the soul of someone she cares deeply about, I enjoyed this aspect of the book and how it all played out; the little twists we are given certainly kept the storyline intriguing and I loved the look we are given into Niko's paranormal world.

The secondary characters were each interesting and played an important role in this book, but Ben was definitely my favorite, I adored the relationship he shared with Arianne and Janika, the Reaper of NY the least enjoyable although her feistiness kept me entertained.

My main complaints with this book, it's that I wish the romance would have taken longer to develop – it seemed a tad rushed and there were also a few plot points which were predictable and a not believable but they didn’t take away from me enjoying this book.

The premise of Reaping Me Softly was enough to draw me in and keep me engaged in the story, I really enjoy Ms Evangelista’s writing, it is entertaining, easy to follow and read.

Reaping Me Softly is a nice first installment in what I believe is to be a series.

Review: 4 out of 5 stars

Taste was kindly provided to me by the author, Kate Evangelista in exchange for my honest review.

I have had my eye on Taste for a while now so I was quite excited when the opportunity came up to read and review it and I am so pleased it didn't fail to disappoint, it was a book which had me riveted and wanting to know more from the very first page.

Phoenix McKay broke the one rule at Barinkoff Academy - no students on campus after curfew, and the rule exists for a perfectly valid reason as Phoenix soon finds out. Residing on campus is a mysterious group known as night students but she is thankfully saved and returned to her dorms by a gorgeous, enigmatic but evasive guy named Demetri.

Phoenix is a character who truly lacked self-preservation, I wouldn’t say she was careless as much as I would call her extremely curious with authority issues, but I absolutely adored her! She had spunk, was witty and humorous and her knack for needing to know everything made her an enjoyable heroine, she was also extremely selfless.

We find out a lot more about the night students after Phoenix agrees to partake in an experiment in which she will be injected with a formula that will allow her body to mimic a flesh-eater or Zhamvy as they are known and will enable researcher Dray to study her in the hopes of finding a cure for his people who are dying out.

We also have two love interests, Demetri who just happens to be a Crown Prince and is the more serious and emotionless of the two and Luka who was flirty and fun; despite them being so different I did prefer Phoenix’s connection to Demetri. I found Luka’s background to be quite intriguing but I saw him as more of a best friend or brotherly figure for Phoenix. Although I am not a fan of love triangles what so ever, I never felt there was much of a choice between the two, it worked out well.

The well constructed world Ms Evangelista has created was enthralling, I liked the unique paranormal twist and despite the creepy species they were I am thankful there wasn’t much flesh eating going on and they weren’t depicted as being gruesome in any way besides their diet, they were actually all extremely beautiful and their customs although unusual made for an interesting read.

The side characters were well-developed, bad guys included – I especially liked Dray, Demetri’s brother and crazy scientist as well as Luka’s sister, Yana who was fun and snarky.

I enjoyed Ms Evangelista’s writing, the fast paced plot, wonderful characters and mesmerizing setting; I love books which take place around schools/academies etc. and Barinkoff was no exception.

Overall, Taste was a fun and enjoyable read and a nice twist on the Zombie/Human relationship. I am definitely eager to read more books written by Kate Evangelista.
