The League of Skull & Bones, Book 1 of The Grimm Chronicles

Prologue: I wasn’t alone in the dark.

Snarls and growls surrounded me, running my blood cold. I moved my head from side to side, scrunching my eyes, trying desperately to catch sight of the beasts before they reached me.

My crimson swords weighed so heavily in my hands that I felt as if I’d been fighting for what seemed like eternity.

Claws and fangs suddenly slashed out from the darkness and I did my best to defend myself, though in my heart I knew it was a losing battle. The beasts were overpowering me and soon I wouldn’t be able to stop them. No one was coming to save me. I was alone.

Talons slashed across my back and warm blood trickled down as pain shot across my spine. I stumbled and the beasts—I was sure—tasted victory. They moved in at me in waves. I spun my blades trying to battle the never-ending tide, trying to survive.

It was hopeless. For every monster I took down, another two took its place. I wanted to live, I wanted to fight, but the agonizing pain of my flesh being torn and sliced was too great to bear. I couldn’t go on. The jaws of one of the beasts clamped on my wrist, and I lost my grip on one of my swords. It fell from my hand and clattered to the ground and with it went my last vestige of hope.

Blood drained from my body and my vision faded. I would soon black out, and then the beasts would feast on me. A scream bubbled in my throat and my mouth fell open, but no sounds came out. I closed my eyes, not wanting to see my own death and hoped that darkness would take me before the beasts did.I bolted out of bed, my mouth still open in a silent scream, and my sheets tangled around me soaked with sweat. I stood at the foot of my bed, my breathing coming in ragged gasps.

The nightmares came almost every night. I couldn’t escape them no matter how hard I tried. I yanked at the sheets, dragging them off me and tossing them back onto the bed.

I’d worn only an old t-shirt to bed, though now I wished I had worn more.

I didn’t want to see my scars, didn’t want to be reminded yet again, but I couldn’t stop my fingers from tracing over the ugly scars that marked my arms and upper torso. I walked from the top floor of my loft, down the stainless steel steps to the kitchen area.

I yanked open the fridge and grabbed the container of milk and took a gulp. I placed it back in the fridge and slammed the door closed. I slipped down onto the couch that faced the large windows dotting the walls of my loft and sighed at the breathtaking view of Paris. It always calmed me.

My fingers mindlessly drifted over the scars on my arms. They were a reminder of the very real night I had been trapped in a nearly unwinnable fight. Monsters had surrounded me and had almost killed me. If it hadn’t been for my friends, I would have died. But I hadn’t died, or had I? I was far from the girl I had once been. Once I was the prettiest girl in school, and the girl who had hit every club and had had a blast when she had moved to Paris. But after the vicious attack everything had changed, most of all me.

My fingers suddenly stopped, settling on the edges of identical tattoos on both my forearms. I glanced down at the image of a Skeleton Key. My scars refused to cross paths with the tattoos, as if they knew that they dared not go near them. I slid my finger over the tattoo, and felt a buzz of power run through me. These unwanted tattoos were another reminder of something else entirely. But unlike my scars, I had chosen these. The monsters may not have gotten me, but these tattoos were a different matter. They marked me for death.

I pulled my knees up into my chest and took a deep breath. Maybe I would wait here until dawn. Then I wouldn’t have to worry about any more nightmares or death that constantly stalked me.

I sat alone in the dark looking out on the City of Lights, awaiting the dawn and praying that I could keep death at bay and that I wouldn’t hear the sound of monsters.

Review: 4 ½ out of 5 stars

Contains spoilers from the previous books

The Detective Inspectors is the fourth book in The Doorknob Society saga and was kindly provided to me by the author, MJ Fletcher in exchange for my honest review.

I am a huge fan of The Doorknob Society saga and the fantasy world Fletcher has created. It is full of life with amazing characters that I have become truly invested in, ongoing drama, action and a really sweet romance which has been a slow and believable progression.

Chloe Masters was more gun ho in this book, she stands up for what she believes in, she is caring and protective of her friends and family and will do anything possible to put a stop to her mother and the First Kind. In this installment we see her leading her friends on a dangerous mission to locate and rescue Edgar Magnus who was kidnapped in the previous book; the Detective Inspectors HVO have been compromised and she is also sought after and more well known because of her Polymorph abilities which she continues to learn more about.

The plot flowed well and I liked the change of setting; the many twists and turns we are given truly surprised and shocked me which is usually hard to do when you are four books into a series but I like where the story is going and how Chloe is now embracing her powers and becoming more of a leader.

Without giving away any spoilers, I am pleased with the romance and how it has progressed from book one until now – we have a possible three love interests, James Nightshade, Michael Slade and Declan Hardcastle, one I didn’t feel was necessarily needed but I liked that we finally have a clear choice and Chloe is happy.

Each of the secondary characters play an important role in this series, a few standout as favourites such as Nightshade, Edgar, Jess and Val but they are each endearing in their own way; we have a few returning baddies which are also written well and their fight is one I am curious to see played out.

Mr. Fletcher’s writing holds my attention as does the wonderfully gripping story he has created, there is something new with each book; it is all fresh and unique and brings new mystery and intrigue to the ongoing saga as we continue learning about each of the societies.

Overall, The Detective Inspectors is another action-packed and enjoyable read. I am eager to see where Mr. Fletcher will take us on our next journey now the team have been declared outlaws.

"A friend is one who walks in when others walk out"
-Walter Winchell

When I started writing The Doorknob Society, I had a clear idea of the story I wanted to tell and the characters I wanted to create. Along the way something very unexpected happened with my characters. They became, in the most interesting of ways, true friends.

I’ve been very happy with the response to the books, but the thing I find most gratifying is the level on which people have connected to the characters and their friendships. I’ve heard time and time again... I wish I was friends with them.

We all have had friendships that define us and help us become the people we are today. These characters come together at a moment in each of their lives when they have a need of not only help but friendship.

The best friendships not only help you grow but challenge you in ways you never expected. Chloe Masters has been a loner most of her life. When she finally learns what it means to have friends, she will do anything for them. From the friends who she can rely on like the brilliant crackpot Edgar Magnus, to the extremely ordinary Val Hobson, the unexpected enemy turned friend Jess Grimm. Or the friends who she can’t quite define like the upstanding Slade and the enigmatic Nightshade.

Writers care for all of their characters, even the bad ones. Each, in their own way, is special and unique but after having written and lived with these for as long as I have, I have come to one inescapable conclusion, I would like to be friends with them as well.

If you would like to become friends with these characters be sure to check out The Doorknob Society and its sequel The Impossible Engineers.

I’d like to thank Sharon for the chance to blog here today and I hope everyone enjoyed it.

REVIEW: 4 out of 5 stars

I was pleasantly surprised by The Doorknob Society, the synopsis in itself was intriguing but once I got started I was literally pulled into the amazing fantasy world Mr. Fletcher has created.

Chloe Masters has spent most of her life traveling with her master magician father, whilst on a tour in France life as Chloe knows it is about to change; she discovers she will become a part of a unique society known as the Doorknob Society, an order of the Old Kind and can travel through parallel dimensions by touching a doorknob.

Things initially are complicated for Chloe as her father isn’t exactly forthcoming with information about their history, his expulsion from the society, where her mother who disappeared 10 years prior fits in and why there is someone after her. But attending the exclusive Paladin Academy will give her a chance to learn about her new life.

Helping her along the way is Edgar who I found hilarious, Michael Slade who was smart and dreamy and of course arrogant and infuriating James Nightshade. Each character had wonderful characteristics and was developed perfectly; I also liked how Chloe’s friendship progressed with Val.

There was so much happening with this captivating plot, Chloe’s father has gone missing, she needs to find out where her powers lie and within which of the five groups she will fit into (The Doorknob Society, Mapmakers Union, Honorable and Venerable Order of Detective Inspectors, The Impossible Engineers or the Skeleton Key Guild), she is learning about her family history and she is also in the middle of finding out about why people are disappearing and why there is tension between the societies. There was a lot going on but I never found it confusing or hard to keep up, the pacing was spot on.

As a main character feisty Chloe was amazing! I loved how kick-butt she was and stood up for everything she believed in and although it took her a little while to warm to her new friends she eventually came to trust and rely on them which I liked. We also got a great glimpse into each of the secondary characters; James Nightshade certainly has me intrigued.

The Doorknob Society had the perfect amount of mystery, suspense, action and romance. The concept was unique, the plot solid and the characters fleshed out perfectly. I also loved each of the status updates at the beginning of each chapter.

Mr. Fletcher has weaved a wonderfully engrossing story that kept me riveted, I wanted to know so much more about each of the groups and am eager to get hold of the sequel, The Impossible Engineers to learn more about the amazing world Fletcher has created.
