Review: Something in the Air by Marie Landry

Something in the AirAuthor: Marie Landry
Series: -
Pages: 246
Publisher: Self
Release date: 10th November 2015

Synopsis (Goodreads) - Her life hasn't gone as planned, but she's about to realize that sometimes the best things happen when you stop expecting life to be a certain way...

When Rose Morgan put off her college plans to help her mother through a difficult time, she thought it would just be a bump in the road of her journey. She got a job to help pay the bills and started picking up the slack at home. But three years later, her bumpy ride hasn’t smoothed out yet, and Rose feels stuck. She’s working at a job she hates and living with a manipulative mother. She’s tired of feeling like her life has stalled, tired of the resentment and anger building inside her with each passing day.

Then Declan Connelly appears in her life, and even though the hot Irishman is seriously tempting, Rose is determined not to let him in. She’s afraid to suck anyone into her bizarre life, especially someone who seems too charming for his own good. She soon learns there’s more to Declan than his sexy accent and charismatic personality, though. He’s a good man, and he wants Rose in his life, baggage and all. He’s got his own, and he isn’t scared away like she originally feared he would be.

Everything in Rose’s life is changing quickly. It’s finally her time--time to figure out what she wants and what her future holds. Time to get swept off her feet and not fight it. But when her plans might take her away from all the amazing new things in her life, including Declan, Rose has to make a choice. Is she willing to chase her dreams, even if it means letting go of love?

Review: 4 out of 5 stars

I am such a huge fan of Marie, she is an amazing author and a fantastic blogging friend so I was quite eager to read Something in the Air and it didn’t fail to disappoint.

I needed a light-hearted read at this time and despite their being a few confrontations and a bit of angst between the main character Rose Morgan and her mother, it was nothing over the top or dramatic which I appreciated.

Twenty year old Rose is more or less stuck in a rut, working for the local diner, waiting on her mother hand and foot and with only one friend her life has been put on hold, she has no idea what she wants to do so with some encouragement from her best friend Dante she slowly begins to do what she wants to do and stands up against her needy, lying mother.

It was nice to see Rose progress as a character throughout the book, she seemed quite meek and a bit of a push-over when we first meet her but as she slowly made changes her life improved – she moved out of home, made some friends, quit her job and started another, reconnected with her father and also started a relationship with a smexy Irishman, Declan Connelly. She was a really loveable character.

At the beginning of the book, I honestly thought (and hoped) that Rose would end up with her best friend Dante who I absolutely adored, he was amazing; such a protective sweetheart and although I thought her relationship progressed at a rapid pace with Declan, I soon fell as hard for him as what Rose did, he was great! I also loved the friendship she came to have with Declan’s cousin who I really hope Marie will write a book about (preferably with Dante).

Overall, Something in the Air is well written, fun and entertaining with a great cast of characters; it’s a light-hearted read with a satisfying ending.

Series/Author spotlight - Marie Landry (Angel Island)

I am pleased to welcome the lovely, Marie Landry to the blog today to share with us details of her Angel Island series and also a teaser from her upcoming book Take Them by Storm.

The Angel Island books are a series of standalone companion novels. Waiting for the Storm is Charlotte O’Dell’s story, After the Storm features Charlotte’s sister Ella, and Take Them by Storm is about Ella’s best friend, Sadie. The books explore themes of grief, family, friendship, love in its many forms, romance, and more.

Waiting for the Storm (Angel Island, #1)Waiting for the Storm

Synopsis: After the death of her mother, the last thing seventeen-year-old Charlotte O'Dell wants to do is spend the summer on Angel Island with her family. Her younger sister hates her, and her dad is in his own little world. It's a recipe for a disastrous summer on the island, until Ezra Rhodes walks into her life.

The boy next door makes Charlotte forget her almost paralyzing fear of really living her life. Stunted from taking care of her mother in her last months, Charlotte is drowning. With Ezra, she feels something again, and as he repairs her family's summer home, she dares to think he might actually be fixing her, too. Ezra challenges Charlotte to leave her comfort zone, and as their friendship slowly blossoms into more, Charlotte begins to come alive again.

But Ezra has secrets...secrets he isn't sharing with Charlotte. Despite her new-found happiness in Ezra's arms, Charlotte can't help but feel there's a storm on the horizon. And she isn't sure if she and Ezra can weather it unscathed.

After the Storm (Angel Island, #2)After the Storm

Synopsis: For most people, starting senior year at a new high school would be a nightmare, but for Ella O’Dell it’s the new beginning she desperately needs. Two months after her mother’s death, she’s ready to leave behind the rebellious, unhappy person she became when she found out her mom was dying.

When Ella meets River Maracle and Sadie Fitzgerald, she begins to learn it’s okay to be herself, even if that means being different. River and Sadie aren’t ashamed of their misfit status—River grew up on a reservation, and his mother is the school counselor; Sadie stands out with her funky homemade clothes, and is a master at ignoring the whispered rumors that have plagued her since the beginning of high school.

Ella finds a kindred spirit in Sadie, and something more in River. After almost a year of pretending to be someone she’s not, she finally embraces life and allows herself to have fun without constant guilt. But despite her budding happiness, something is off with her new life. She doesn’t want to dwell on the past, but Angel Island is a small place, and she soon realizes her demons are harder to outrun than she thought…

A year after graduating from high school, nineteen-year-old Emma Ward feels lost. She has spent most of her life trying to please her frigid, miserable mother - studying hard, getting good grades, avoiding the whole teenage rebellion thing - and now she feels she has no identity beyond that. Because she spent so many years working hard and planning every moment of her life, she doesn't have any friends, has never had a boyfriend, and basically doesn't know who she is or what she really wants from life. Working two part-time jobs to save money for college hasn't helped her make decisions about her future, so she decides it's time for a change. She leaves home to live with her free-spirited, slightly eccentric Aunt Daisy in a small town that makes Emma feel like she's stepped back in time.

When Emma meets Nicholas Shaw, everything changes - he's unlike anyone she's ever met before, the kind of man she didn't even know existed in the 21st century. Carefree and spirited like Daisy, Nicholas teaches Emma to appreciate life, the beauty around her, and to just let go and live. Between Daisy and Nicholas, Emma feels like she belongs somewhere for the first time in her life, and realizes that you don't always need a plan - sometimes life steers you where you're meant to be.

Life is wonderful, an endless string of blue sky days, until Nicholas is diagnosed with cancer, and life changes once again for Emma in ways she never thought possible. Now it's time for her to help Nicholas the way he's helped her. Emma will have to use her new-found strength, and discover along the way if love really is enough to get you through.

June 27th is the 20th anniversary of my dad’s death from leukemia. For a long time I’ve wanted to honour him in some way, and I thought having the relaunch of Blue Sky Days, a book that was partly inspired by him, would be the perfect tribute. My dad was a wonderful man—smart, funny, kind, and loyal. He was an amazing father, husband, brother, and friend. Even before he died, I knew I wanted to be a writer, and he would listen to my crazy made-up stories with the patience of a saint.

From the 27th-30th of June, half the proceeds from all sales of Blue Sky Days will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. If you already own a copy, maybe you’d consider buying the book for a friend or family member? Or buying another copy from a different retailer (like Smashwords, which offers the book in every format)?

I greatly appreciate the support of the online reading/writing community for helping me honour my dad.

Thanks to eight incredible sponsors, there's a huge blitz-wide giveaway! There will be three (3) $20 PayPal cash prizes. Three chances to win - not too shabby, huh? This giveaway is open internationally to people aged 18+ who can accept PayPal cash.

Marie has always been a daydreamer; since early childhood she's had a passion for words and a desire to create imaginary worlds, so it only seemed natural for her to become a writer. She resides in Ontario, Canada, and most days you can find her writing, reading, blogging about writing and reading, listening to U2, watching copious amounts of TV on DVD, or having grand adventures with her nephews and niece. Review: 4 ½ out of 5 stars

What an emotional, heartfelt and captivating story! I absolutely loved Marie Landry’s debut novel Blue Sky Days so when the opportunity arose to read Waiting for the Storm, I jumped at the chance and boy am I glad I did.

Charlotte O’Dell is grief-stricken and lonely after losing her mother and is fulfilling her final wish by spending the summer with her estranged sister Ella and her father who is lost in his own personal grief at a beach house on Angel Island, it’s her chance to move on and heal from her heart-ache and pain with the hope of mending the rift in her broken family.

Ezra {swoon} is Charlotte’s new neighbour and a godsend to her, hired to fix the holiday house they form a bond which was built on a mutual understanding of pain and also friendship; he gave her a sympathetic ear, a shoulder to cry on and helped her to deal with her fears and her loss and at the same time built a sweet romance whilst dealing with his own personal pain, I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Ezra, he was a character I enjoyed getting to know and as the pieces of his past and present were put together, my opinion of him was boosted, his kindness and his devotion was amazing.

The emotions this book evoked were aplenty, each character was dealing with their own inner turmoil and although they handled things differently they were each enjoyable to read about, it was a story which not only highlighted the pain of losing someone but also the hope that the hurt would eventually heal with time and support.

I loved the way Marie tackled the many real life issues such as abuse, loss, grief and depression, you are drawn into this story and empathise with the characters, some you want to just scream at – Ella, but others you want to smother in a hug – Charlotte, dad & Ezrah.

One thing I did like was the way the sisters relationship changed over the course of the book, I thought in the initial stages there was no hope at all – it was shrouded by jealousy, anger and resentment and although the way they came together wasn’t in the way I would have expected it was nice to see it evolve.

Waiting for the Storm shows Marie’s talent for writing amazing, heart-warming stories with beautiful, believable characters you can’t help but love. This book was emotionally gripping with a satisfying ending to a wonderful tale. I enjoyed every moment!

A review copy of this book was given to me by the author, Marie Landry in exchange for my honest thoughts.
