Synopsis (Goodreads): If high school is all about social status, Indigo Blackwood has it made. Sure, her quirky mom owns an occult shop, and a nerd just won’t stop trying to be her friend, but Indie is a popular cheerleader with a football-star boyfriend and a social circle powerful enough to ruin everyone at school. Who wouldn’t want to be her? Then a guy dies right before her eyes. And the dusty old family Bible her mom is freakishly possessive of is stolen. But it’s when a frustratingly sexy stranger named Bishop enters Indie’s world that she learns her destiny involves a lot more than pom-poms and parties. If she doesn’t get the Bible back, every witch on the planet will die. And that’s seriously bad news for Indie, because according to Bishop, she’s a witch too. Suddenly forced into a centuries-old war between witches and sorcerers, Indie’s about to uncover the many dark truths about her life—and a future unlike any she ever imagined on top of the cheer pyramid.
Review: 2 out of 5 stars
I am a big fan of witch books so I was instantly
intrigued by Hexed but unfortunately it failed to wow me
as other similar witch/magic books have eg. The Hex Hall series.
Sixteen year old Indigo Blackwood seems to have it
all, popularity, a wonderful quirky mum and a football star boyfriend. When she
witnesses an unusual murder, rather than sticking around she does the bolt and
takes a random piece of paper with details about her mother’s store from the
body; unusual things happen after which have to do with an old bible that has
been protected by her mother for reasons she soon learns.
My biggest problem with this book was Indigo, her
childishness, bitchy attitude, reticence about what she was and bland humour
didn’t endear me to her whatsoever, she was shallow and self-absorbed and
didn’t have the type of personality I usually find myself liking in a YA
heroine. I didn't mind the side characters but each had your stereotypical YA personalities, Bishop was a mysterious bad boy
and Indigo’s saviour and protector on numerous occasions but his initial stalker-ish behaviour was really unusual. Paige was great, I definitely wouldn’t have been so
forgiving of the way Indigo had treated her but she was really sweet and
forgave and forgot easily.
What I did like were the action sequences which kept
things interesting and the plot twists and turns kept the book
entertaining but for some reason I couldn’t take it seriously; I didn’t feel
the true danger for some reason, it was all very light hearted and the villains weren't all that scary.
The writing is simplistic; I enjoyed learning about
the witches, warlocks and sorcerers but we are left with a cliff-hanger ending and
many unanswered questions.
Overall, Hexed
was riddled with YA clichés and stereotypes, bland humour and an MC that wasn’t
likable at all and despite the promising story-line, I’m not sure if I’ll race
out to purchase the sequel.
