Sixteen-year-old Maddie Dunn is special, but she needs to figure out how to use her new abilities before somebody else gets hurt. Ganzfield is a secret training facility full of people like her, but it's not exactly a nurturing place.

Every social interaction carries the threat of mind-control.

A stray thought can burn a building to the ground.

And people's nightmares don't always stay in their own heads. But it's still better than New Jersey. Especially once she meets the man of her dreams...

REVIEW: 4 out of 5 stars

Minder is the first book in the Ganzfield series by Kate Kaynak.

Minder starts out with Sixteen-year-old Maddie Dunn being assaulted by three teens that she inadvertently kills just with a simple thought. As a result, she has been noticed by an organization known as Ganzfield who have whisked her away for training and to learn more about her newfound and unusual ability as a Telepath or Minder.

Ganzfield is a facility for those with unique abilities, the students are categorized as Sparks (those who can start fires), Healers (those who heal with a touch) Charms (who can sway a persons mind) Minders (telepaths who can read minds) and a sole individual, Trevor Laurence who has the ability of telekinesis. I really enjoyed the scientific explanation about why each of these people had their power and how they were enhanced by receiving an injection.

I enjoyed the premise of Minder but along with the good people we also have the bad and those wanting to exploit those considered abominations at Ganzfield. The action scenes were great and kept the story flowing well.

Maddie was a strong, capable and caring character; she stood up for what she believed in and adapted to her new powers extremely well. People feared her because of what she was and she was able to use this against those who caused grief to others – the charms specifically who didn’t often use their abilities in a positive way. Maddie became somewhat of a leader.

Maddie’s love interest is Trevor who is sweet, kind and caring; I enjoyed their interactions and the dialogue between them. The only thing I didn’t like was how quickly their relationship progressed, I tend to like a bit of a build-up and unfortunately it didn’t happen in this book.

Minder is very well written; I liked Ms Kaynak’s writing style and attention to detail. The plot is enjoyable and the pacing even although it dipped in the middle which I felt focused more on the interactions between Maddie and Trevor.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Minder’s concept; the good versus evil storyline and each of the endearing characters made for an extremely enjoyable read. I am keen to read the next book in the series, Adversary.
