Author Interview + Giveaway - Ada Adams (Angel Creek Series)

 Ada Adams

Ada Adams is one of my fave authors! Her Angel Creek series is fabulous and has kept me up and obsessing until all hours, there has also been many re-reads! The last book in the series {sob} ReBorn is due to be released in early 2015.

I am pleased to be able to share an interview with Ada on the blog today.

We are also offering one winner the chance to win a copy of ReVamped and ReAwakened.

Books in order:

ReVamped (Angel Creek, #1)ReVamped (Angel Creek #1)

A simple mission turned deadly.

Nineteen-year-old vampire Dawn has led a sheltered life within the confines of her father’s presidential headquarters. Upon being sent on a mission to revamp four goofy misfits into guardians of a peaceful little town of Angel Creek, Dawn believes that all her dreams have finally come true. What starts off as a simple task, turns into something unexpected, changing Dawn’s life forever and leading the action-loving, thrill-seeking vampire teen on a path of mystery, danger and intrigue.

When a human girl is kidnapped by a group of rogue vamps, Dawn discovers that there is more going on in Angel Creek than meets the eye. And it all connects to Ethan, the cute newcomer who seems too perfect to be true, Sebastian, the mysterious vampire with a turbulent past, and even Dawn herself. Dawn must not only succeed in revamping the troubled recruits, but must also prevent the vampire race from being overtaken by a malevolent villain who has a strange and obsessive fascination with her. As threat escalates, romance blooms, and ghosts from her past begin to surface, Dawn is sure of only one thing: her life will never be the same.

ReAwakened (Angel Creek, #2)ReAwakened (Angel Creek #2)

Becoming a vampire guardian was Dawn Fairchild’s ticket out of the Scarlet House. Fresh off a successful mission, life in Angel Creek should have been great. But when her sort-of-maybe-boyfriend, Sebastian, disappears on a quest to help a beautiful vampire from his past, Dawn finds herself amidst a web of danger, lies, and deceit.

Joining forces with Razor, an enigmatic rebel lacking both a verbal and a physical filter, and her band of Misfits—Brooke, Sophie, Hunter, and Seth—Dawn is thrust into a race against the clock to solve the mystery surrounding brutal Born kidnappings and come to terms with the sudden discovery of her own unique powers. With time ticking away and Born vampires’ lives in jeopardy, it quickly becomes evident that someone—orsomething—desperately wants Dawn and is willing to shed any amount of blood to get her.

Dawn has only one chance to face her demons and overcome all obstacles standing in her way as she embarks on the biggest mission of her life—one that threatens a deadly outcome for all involved.

ReBorn (Angel Creek # 3) March 2015

ReBorn (Angel Creek, #3)
Welcome to Obsession with Books Ada, Are you able to tell us a little about your amazing series Angel Creek?

Thank you so much for having me, Sharon. I’m a big fan of your blog! :)

Angel Creek is a fun, quirky take on the usually dark vampire genre. Since our society’s fascination with vampires was at its height in 2011/2012 when I wrote the first book, ReVamped, I was interested in exploring what would happen if vampires decided to “come out of the coffin” and join our world. Our bookshelves are already full of great literature about scary, sexy vamps, so I wanted to take a more humorous approach to the genre by writing about a group of misfit vamps who need a lot of work not only to become strong vampires, but also grow as human beings.

How many books do you have planned for the Angel Creek series and has the story progressed as you had originally envisioned it or have there been unexpected changes along the way?

ReVamped and ReAwakened are currently out, and ReBorn is due next year in March. That will conclude the series. However, since I want to explore some of the secondary characters’ stories, I’m considering possible spin-offs if there is demand from fans.

ReBorn has taken longer than I’d anticipated to edit and release due to the fact that something big goes down plot-wise and I had to give Dawn and the team some time to learn and grow from it. I can’t give out any spoilers, but I promise that it’ll be intense. And you might hate me. Or not. Hopefully not. :) Overall, it’ll be a wild ride. Even though the three books barely span two years, Dawn changes very much and all of the misfits learn many things about themselves. They’re all completely different from the start of ReVamped to the end ofReBorn.

What is your ideal day as an author?

48 hours long. There is NEVER enough time in my current day…or week.

Is there anything about you that would surprise your readers? Any quirks, habits, routines etc.

I’m a walking contradiction. I’m the most outgoing homebody you’ll ever meet. I’m a dedicated workaholic with way too many hobbies. I live to travel, but hate flying. I love exciting adventures, but am a scaredy-cat. Overall, I think I would be an extremely entertaining contestant on The Amazing Race. “Ready to go bungee jumping?” “YES! Wait….no way! Uhh…maybe?”

Are you able to tell us about your research and writing process?

It really depends on the project. I’m currently working on a few other things aside from the Angel Creek Series that ranges from contemporary romances to dark thrillers. For some writing (especially in the paranormal genre) I prefer to let my imagination to all the work, but sometimes you must do research in order to be factually correct. My research for current WIPs ranges from interviewing doctors and other professionals to just simple google and book research. There is one special project that I plan to write in the near future that will require some travel and a lot of emotionally draining, personal research. I’m not in that place where I’m ready to take it on and fully commit to it as it will take me out of the genres I usually work in and will require a lot of time and commitment, but I’m very excited to take the leap when the time comes.

Are there certain influences that inspire you when writing? (literary and non-literary)

It really depends. I’m usually inspired by snippets of things, ranging from people’s personalities, my interactions with strangers (I usually stay away from writing about people I’m close with), feelings and sentences that come to me, dreams, etc. I wouldn’t say there is one thing (person, book, event) that I’m inspired by. Except for that big project mentioned in the previous response—that particular story was inspired by a specific scary event.

If the Angel Creek series was to be made into a movie, who would you chose to play the roles of your main characters?

I have no idea! I always throw this question back to my fans. You guys are way better at fantasy casting. :)

I recently read that you have a Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, you have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology as well as a Masters of Science in Education – do you use your knowledge and experience when writing your books?

Sometimes. I’ve always been interested in psychology, so I do employ a lot of my knowledge in my writing, both when developing personalities and also having characters experience certain events. My karate skills have helped me in writing fight scenes—both good and bad ones. For example, one of the biggest mistakes people who’ve never fought make is to tuck their thumb into their hand when punching. This is a good way to break your thumb or hurt yourself. If I had a character who had never thrown a punch before, he/she might make this basic mistake. Karate came in handy when writing Dawn, since she is a very skilled fighter and there are certain scenes where my knowledge really helped.

What is up next for you?

I have two projects releasing under my pen name before the end of the year, then ReBorn and my YA/NA thriller series next year. Hopefully, a lot of really fun work is ahead. :)

Quick Questions:

Fave television series / movie?

Way too many to name. I’m a huge TV/film buff, so I could spend days listing my favourite shows and still miss a ton. Here’s a quickie list for you I’ve compiled off the top of my head.

Favorite vintage shows: RoswellBuffyFriendsVeronica Mars; Favourite shows I didn’t watch when I was younger, but just now marathoner: Gilmore GirlsFriday Night Lights; Favorite thirty-minute comedies: The Mindy ProjectBad Education (BBC), Modern Family, The Office, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia; Favorite paranormal stuff: SupernaturalThe Walking Dead; Favorite Sundayshows: Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Sherlock, Sons of Anarchy, Shameless. I have a bit of a “network during pilot season” approach to television—I’ll give many things a try and some will end up on my must-see, primetime slot and others will be my when I need a break and nothings else is on shows. But I really truly watch a variety of shows and genres. One thing I don’t watch a lot of is hard-core sci-fi and weirdly, enough, I haven’t seen the more contemporary vampire shows (I think I’m the only person who’s not watchedThe Vampire Diaries or the last few seasons of True Blood.)

Coffee or tea? Bubble tea, but I’ve lately started drinking coffee as well. So I could write faster, haha.

E-reader or hardcopy? In the last year, I’ve become a Kindle convert. I will always purchase my favorite books in hardcover, but I love the freedom of being able to bring my Kindle anywhere and everywhere, thus taking hundreds of books on the road with ease.

Ideal travel destination? I really want to do a trip all around Asia. Australia is a close second. Ahh, it’s hard to decide. I need to see the entire world!

Fave book – Standalone or series? It depends, though I like series because you can get to know the characters over a longer period of time. I’m impatient, so I tend to wait until the full series is out before starting the first book…DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG I HAD TO WAIT FOR THE LAST “HARRY POTTER” BOOK?! Exactly.

Excerpt:

My two-story fall was cushioned by a sturdy, muscular torso. The owner of the muscles—a vampire, I realized—groaned as I landed on top of him, forcing him into the muddy ground. I reached for my dagger, but he was quicker. He slipped out from underneath me, flipping me over in the process so that he was quickly astride me. His firm body pressed tightly against mine as his hands pinned my wrists to either side of my head. As a bolt of lightning struck a nearby tree, I was greeted by a mischievous smirk dancing across perfectly-shaped full lips.

“Quite feisty, aren’t you?” he chuckled, bending forward to examine me. Deep, charcoal eyes overflowed with amusement.

He was actually enjoying this.

“I don’t wanna hurt you,” he whispered in a deep, throaty voice. “I’m gonna release you now. Don’t do anything stupid.”

He lifted his arm, removing his right hand from my left wrist. The moment I felt some freedom, I leaped forward, attempting a left hook at his jaw. He blocked my hand, once again pushing it toward the ground.

“I said I wasn’t going to hurt you!” he growled, pinning me even further into the soft, wet earth.

“But I never said that I wouldn’t hurt you!” I snapped.

He brought his face toward mine. “I’d like to see you try,” he whispered.

Challenge accepted.

Now I just had to find a way out of the vampire’s tight grasp. I raised my head—the only part of me that wasn’t restrained by his body—inching my lips closer to his. He tensed for a moment, his eyes searching mine, as if surprised by my sudden change in behavior. Drops of rainwater slid down his chiseled jaw, pausing briefly on his lips before they plummeted down to mine. Then, a slow, smug smile spread across his face. I felt his body relax and he leaned even closer. His breath caressed my skin as his lips drew near.

It was exactly what I needed. Summoning all my strength, I twisted my hips to the side, shooting them up and out, then launching my legs off the ground. Thrown off-balance, my captor groaned and released one of my arms to brace for the fall, giving me the chance to free my dagger. In one smooth move I was quickly behind him, securing him in a headlock with the blade of my weapon aimed directly at his heart.

“Who are you?” I demanded when I was certain he couldn’t escape my grip.

“I’m a twenty-four-year-old Taurus who enjoys long walks on the beach.” Even though I couldn’t see his face, I could feel his arrogant grin.

“You have ten seconds to explain yourself,” I ordered. “Or I’m really going to hurt you.”

“Oh, come on! Can’t we get back to the kissing? You can’t tease a guy like that.”

“Ten, nine…” I pressed the dagger deeper into him, nicking the leather of his jacket.

“Hey! Watch it!”

“Eight…”

“Oh, alright. You’re no fun,” he sighed. “My name is Razor.”

“What kind of a name is that?”

“It’s a nickname.”

“What kind of a nickname is that?”

“Spike, Blade, Fang—all the good, deadly objects were already taken. It was the best I could do.”

“What are you doing here?”

“I‘m simply an innocent gentleman trying to survive an attack by a crazy girl,” he teased, grinning.

“I’m going to start counting down again,” I warned.

“Okay, okay. I’ll tell you everything. But first, can you call off your pet dagger, please? I’ll be good, I promise.”

I scoffed. “Why should I trust you?”

“Because…I’m irresistibly charming?” He turned his head back to look at me. “Pretty please?” he asked, giving me another one of his teasing smirks—a trademark move that no girl refused, I figured, vowing to never be one of those girls.

“Oh, alright,” I conceded. “But if you try something, I swear I’ll use my pet dagger to cut off—”

“I said I’d behave! Though, you’re making it kinda hard to be good with all that talk of wanting to have your way with me.”

I released my grip on his neck and smacked the top of his head.

“Let’s go inside,” I ordered.

Review: 5 out of 5 stars

I absolutely loved Ada Adams debut novel ReVamped but the sequel ReAwakened absolutely blew me away! This series is fast becoming one of my favorites with amazing characters, action, mystery, and a unique setting; I couldn’t put this book down.

Dawn Fairchild is still reeling after the events of ReVamped; she has been through a lot but has really grown as a character; she is still full of kick-butt awesomeness but is also caring, determined and innocent which I really liked and in this installment we see her having to save someone very close to her as well as solve the mystery of the born vampire kidnappings, It really showed how far she was willing to go to help those closest to her.

I loved each of the secondary characters – both bad and good were fleshed out and written well; we learn a lot more about the guardian misfits in this installment and you can’t help but adore them all – the banter and snark between them certainly brings some humor to the story. I especially loved the introduction of Razor who was an absolute classic and a great addition! I can’t wait to learn more about him.

I really enjoyed the romance! Ethan didn’t play as big a role in this book but we definitely got more Sebastian page time thank goodness! I love this, broody, mysterious, smexy guy and he really showed his devotion and protective streak towards Dawn which I really really liked; his emotions weren’t as hidden and their relationship played out beautifully.

Ada’s detailed writing is flawless; the world she has created is absolutely wonderful and her take on Vampires is refreshing. The emotions portrayed were realistic, the characters each written perfectly and the fast-paced action scenes conveyed the danger vividly. ReAwakened is a wonderful sequel and really showcased Ada's talent as an author.

We are left with a heart wrenching ending! I was literally squirming and really dread the wait for the next book.

Overall, an amazing addition to this fabulous series! Excellent writing, characters you won't soon forget, and a story full of intrigue and mystery.
