Review: Demons (Eirik #1) by Ednah Walters

Demons (Eirik #1)Demons

Author: Ednah Walters
Series: Eirik
Pages: 310
Publisher: Firetrail Publishing
Release date: 15th December 2015

Synopsis (Goodreads) – Demons continues the Runes series by USA Today bestselling author Ednah Walters. What happened to Eirik after he left his friends on Earth and went to Hel?

Eirik Baldurson—son of Baldur, God of Light—failed living as a Mortal. He lost the girl of his dreams and nearly got his friends killed. Now, he's gone to the underworld to meet the mother he’s never known. Torn between his duty to her and the man he used to be, Eirik struggles to find himself, until a witch appears in his world. Feisty and stubborn, she is a reminder of everything good he left behind.

Celestia Devereaux proudly attends a charter high school for “gifted” teenagers who embrace magic. Witches. However, she keeps a terrible secret—a prediction that she would one day be responsible for massive destruction and death. Though Celestia uses her clairvoyant abilities to help people, she worries that it is just a matter of time before she goes over to the dark side.

Her world changes when she unexpectedly astral projects to a place she didn’t believe existed and meets a tortured man who needs her help. Will helping him cause her fears to come true, or will he sacrifice everything to save her?

Runes series continues with Eirik's books.

Review: 4 out of 5 stars

Contains possible spoilers from the Runes series.

Demons is a continuation of the Runes series but from Eiriks POV.

Eirik is Raine from the Runes series best friend and has recently found out that he is the son of Baldur, God of Light and has been hidden in the human world not having any idea of who his real parents were. I have always loved Eirik, he was a strong character so it was great to read from his POV and see the changes in him – there is more anger but he is trying to adapt to his new life.

We follow Eirik into the world of Hel in order for him to meet his birth mother, Goddess Hel who rules the underworld but his welcome is definitely not what he expected and he ends up thrown in the dungeon until he can prove himself to her. The dynamic between Baldur and Hel was certainly interesting but my heart broke for Eirik and what we learn of his past.

Celestia Devereaux is a seventeen year-old witch in training and is able to astral project to save others; this is how she first met Eirik or so she thought. Celestia was pretty amazing! She has such a strong personality and complimented Eririk well. She is strong willed, determined, a little stubborn but also very sweet. There is a prediction about Celestia in that she would one day be responsible for destruction and the harbinger of death, something that she fights with every day and keeps secret but I loved her witch pride and the way that she was so eager to help everyone that she was able to astral project to.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ednah Walters’ world-building, it is full of norse mythology and intrigue, with a really sweet slow to burn budding romance, my favourite! The mythology was well explained and I loved learning more about the souls and other creatures that reside in Hel.

We meet some great side characters, I loved Trudy; a gigantress and it was great to see a reappearance from Echo.

I have read all of Ednah Walter’s series and enjoy her engaging writing style. She writes incredible characters that are true to life and storylines that keep you mesmerised and wanting more.

Review: Grimnirs (Runes #2.5) by Ednah Walters

Grimnirs (Runes, #2.5)Grimnirs

Author: Ednah Walters
Series: Runes
Pages: 286
Publisher: Firetrail Publishing
Release date: 2nd December 2013

Synopsis. (Goodreads)

Straight out of the psych ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The guy she’s loved from a distance for years moves away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing.The connection defies logic. Even better, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Too bad Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. He is also a soul reaper. A Grimnir.
The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life.

Review: 4 ½ out of 5 stars

Contains possible spoilers from the first books in the series.

As a huge fan of the Runes series, I couldn't wait to read Grimnirs by Ednah Walters, it was a fabulous addition to the series and leaves me anxious to read the next book in the series, Seeress.

Our main heroine is Cora Jemison, Raine’s amazing best friend who has recently had a stint in a mental institution; she now has the interesting ability to see souls and the arrogant reaper who collects them. Cora was a strong character, a few things have happened in her life most recently but she remained stoic and devoted.

Cora has had a huge crush on one of her best friends – Eirik but since he is MIA she is intrigued by the new, snarky, arrogant Grimnir who has entered her life and made quite the impact. Smexy Echo is a gorgeous badass with a fascinating yet heart breaking backstory which I enjoyed reading about, it softened him as a character; he was cocky and over-confident but he was also extremely loyal and protective when it came to Cora. Their interactions and their dialogue kept me entertained from the very first page.

The plot was fast paced with enjoyable action sequences and has moved the series along nicely. Cora is trying to piece together her time in the psych ward to her time now she is out but things aren’t making sense and time sequences are confusing her as well as new information she is receiving about her best friend Raine, the boy she had a huge crush on Eirick, Echo and also the Norns who may or may not have altered her memories. The premise is interesting and I enjoy Ednah Walter’s take on Norse mythology.

The writing is wonderfully detailed and kept me flipping the pages and eager to learn more; Cora and Echo made a fabulous couple and the multi-layered plot and world-building continues to develop, it’s a must read series that just gets better and better with each book.

The side characters are all brilliant! Marlina is the perfect villain, Eirik is coming to embrace what he is and Ingrid and Andris, who I find hilarious, played a bigger role. The interaction between all of the characters is done very well.

Overall, Grimnirs is a fabulous addition to the Runes series; with mystery, suspense, a swoon worthy and smexy romance and wonderful Norse Mythology it has left me eager for the next book in the series.

Books in order:
  1. Runes
  2. Immortals
  3. Grimnirs
  4. Seeress – April 2014
Thank-you to Firetrail Publishing via Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review Grimnirs.

Synopsis (Goodreads)

Nothing can stop Raine Cooper when she wants something...

Raine finally knows that her gorgeous neighbor, Torin St. James, is a legend straight out of Norse mythology, and that her feelings for him are strong. Torin is crazy about Raine too, breaking the one rule he lives by: Never fall for a mortal. The problem is he no longer remembers her, his memories erased by Norns—Norse destiny deities—to punish her for defying them.

So Raine comes up with a plan...

She will make Torin forget his one rule a second time and fall in love with her all over again.
But she quickly learns that well-laid plans do not work when dealing with deities and supernatural beings. Desperate, Raine makes choices that could not only tear her and Torin further apart, but lead to the destruction of everything and everyone she loves

Review: 5 out of 5 stars

Immortals is a book I have been really eager to read; I was a big fan of Runes and the world and characters Ednah Walters had created so I was keen to see how it would all progress, especially after the ending we were left with.

After the events of the first book, Raine’s life is in turmoil, her peers think she is a witch, Torin doesn’t remember her thanks to the Norns removing his memories of her - her punishment for defying them and her best-friend is acting really odd so she has a lot of work to do to make things right and to understand what is happening around her.

Valkyrie Torin St James is Raine’s smexy next door neighbour and also the person we saw her come to be quite close to in the first book but he no longer remembers who she is despite her knowing tid-bits no one else could have told her about his life, he is confused and infuriating.

Our main characters are written beautifully; Raine is a wonderful character who I came to admire, she wasn’t without her faults but she was compassionate and showed her determination and protective side when it came to those she cared about, she went through immense emotional growth throughout this book. Torin is still completely infuriating but such a sweetheart! I love them individually but put them together and the chemistry is amazing. The romance has progressed at a believable pace which I quite liked.

We come to find out the importance of not only Raine’s role with the Valkyrie’s but also Eirik’s which I found to be quite interesting, the Norn’s have told her she needs to protect him so throughout the course of the book Raine trains to learn more about her heritage and details of their purpose was slowly revealed as was a surprise villain who was causing a bit of behind the scenes drama; I found the Norse mythology truly fascinating and to be written extremely well. The plot was evenly paced and with a few unexpected twists and turns thrown in, it put a real spin on what I thought was actually going to happen, I liked the element of surprise.

The secondary characters are awesome, Eirik is a sweetheart but we see a different side to him in this book, Cora is the supportive friend every girl needs to have but she turned out to be quite the surprise and I adored the parental presence and the love and support they showed to not only Raine but also Eirik.  I also came to like Andris in this book, we also meet powerful Valkyrie Lavania who at times I didn't know whether could be trusted or not.

I adore Ednah Walter’s writing style; the banter between the characters is entertaining and filled with snark and humour which I loved. We get the perfect balance of romance, action and suspense that kept me wanting more, I was so bummed when real-life interfered with my reading time because I didn’t want to put this book down, every spare moment my nose would be glued to the pages.

Overall, a fabulous, kick-butt sequel! Amazing action sequences, norse mythology written extremely well and the best kind of romance and friendships. Ednah Walters is an auto-buy author for me; her story-telling is fabulous.

I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

NB. I have previously posted my review of this wonderful book after receiving it through Netgalley so it is a re-post.

Review: 4 out of 5 stars

I absolutely adore Ednah Walters The Guardian Legacy series so I was eager to jump into Runeswhich is a story filled with mythology, romance and intriguing mystery.

Seventeen year-old Lorraine ‘Raine’ Cooper has a bit on her plate, her father has been missing for a few months, her mother is in denial and convinced he will return and she has to deal with her snarky, smexy Harley riding new neighbour Torin St. James and her conflicted feeling for her best friend now boyfriend Eirik.

It is difficult writing this review without giving away spoilers, the biggest being what Torin is, we find out he is different after he saves Raine by marking her with strange symbols – I was curious throughout and constantly guessing but I was way off the mark; I loved the mystery surrounding him, the runes and learning about his kind and their purpose.

The plot was fast-paced and entertaining; I liked watching Raine learn about the runes and the newcomers to town, I was able to pick up on a few clues early on in the book but I couldn’t piece together if certain events were related to Torin. Towards the end there was also a more sinister vibe so I was eager to see how it would play out and was shocked by the outcome.

My biggest gripe with this book was how Raines relationship was handled with both Eirik and Torin – she was so indecisive and torn and to me she was more or less stringing Eirik along so as not to hurt him,  I don’t like cheating characters and it was more or less what she was doing BUT in saying this, her new relationship status still felt a little more brother/sisterly rather than boyfriend/girlfriend and she did have intentions of ending things with Eirik but there was never really the opportunity to do so. The chemistry between her and Torin and their interactions and fun banter did show who she should have been with from the onset.

The highlight of this book for me were the characters, Raine was fun, loyal and quirky, she was so torn in her feelings and despite not liking the way she handled her relationship with Eirik, she was likeable and ‘real’, Eirik was a loyal sweetheart, Cora as a best friend was absolutely wonderful and smexy Torin was so charming and swoon worthy and despite his evasiveness I really adored him as a character. We also have a mother/daughter bond that was truly perfect; I loved the interactions between Raine and her mother and I was shocked by the twist we are given at the end.

Ednah Walters writing is engrossing and enjoyable; I love the diverse characters she writes as well as the in-depth storyline; with the cliff-hanger surprise ending we are left with, I am definitely eager to dive in to the sequel.
