REVIEW Hex Hall (Hex Hall #1) Rachel Hawkins

Author: Rachel Hawkins
Pages: 323
Genre: YA
Hyperion Book CH

From the blurb.
Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.
As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

REVIEW: 3.5 out of 5 Stars

Hex Hall is narrated by Sophie Mercer, a 16 year old half human and half witch who has been raised by her human mother without any face to face contact with her warlock father, finds herself being sent to Hecate (Hex) Hall after casting one too many spells that have gone wrong.

Hex hall is a boarding type reform school for Prodigium; a group of witches, warlocks, fae, shifters and a vamp; a place they stay until they are 18 years of age.

Sophie manages to get herself into all sorts of trouble on her first day; she is nearly attacked by a shifter then saved & insulted by a gorgeous warlock, she meets three powerful enemies who just happen to want her in their coven and ends up with the vampire outcast as her roommate and eventual best friend.

There is a bit of teenage angst & drama, mystery and a tad bit of romance with Archer Cross who is a complex, mysterious character and one Sophie can't help her feelings for.

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the secondary characters, even those that were annoying and hateful I still enjoyed reading about. There is the typical beautiful but mean girls, the outcast pink loving vampire, the heart throb & of course Cal the gate-keeper and healer who I hope there is more of in book 2.

I absolutely loved Sophie as a character, she is sarcastic, witty and not afraid to say what she is thinking which has gotten her into trouble on few occasions. I look forward to her maturing as a character in upcoming books, to see her meet her father & to understand what and who she really is.

Hex Hall is an easy read, at times predictable, fast paced with a few laugh-out-load moments; it is a little too YA for my taste but still held my interest, It left us with a bit of a cliffhanger so I will definitely be reading the next book in the series, Demonglass, to find out what happens.
